Eligibility and Enrollment

Is Giant Campus of Washington an accredited school? What are Alternative Learning Experiences (ALE)?
Yes, we’re provisionally accredited through the NAAS (Northwest Association of Accredited Schools) as a distance-learning provider. Part-time students will receive an official transcript upon successful course completion. Full-time students will receive a diploma upon meeting our graduation requirements.

Will I earn credit for any elective class I complete?
Yes, all our electives are offered for credit through the state’s Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) program, which encompasses courses that take place outside a traditional classroom setting.

Are all your courses free?
Yes. Because Giant Campus of Washington is a public high school, there’s no cost to take our classes if you’re a state resident. Students who live outside of the state, or the country, are eligible to attend Giant Campus Academy, our tuition-based online school.

What are your eligibility requirements?
Our part-time program is open to all Washington State high school students (public, private and home school) in grades 9-12. Students in grades 11 and 12 may apply for our full-time program. If you’re a public high school student, you must have passed Algebra 1, along with the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (or the High School Proficiency Exam starting in 2009). Private and home school students must have successfully completed Algebra 1, and the WASL or HSPE—or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. Also, your past schoolwork must allow you to meet our graduation requirements by the end of Spring Semester 2011 (12th grade students) or 2012 (11th grade students).

What about students with special needs?

All high school students, including those with special needs, are welcome at Giant Campus of Washington under the Americans with Disabilities Act. This includes any student with a 504 Plan in the United States, or an IEP (Individualized Education Program). An enrollment advisor will be glad to discuss your specific needs.

When can I enroll?
You can enroll in any elective course at any time, but enrollment for each course closes on a specific date. For our summer semester, which begins June 21, 2010, students will be accepted through June 28. Enrollment is also open for our fall semester. For our full-time program, which begins September 1, 2010, students be accepted through September 15. (We’re unable to accept full-time students mid-year.) For more details, click here.

How do I apply to your full-time program?
You must submit an online application, plus a signed copy of the following: OSPI Statement of Understanding, Interdistrict Agreement, Parental Consent, and the Choice Form (private and home school students only). A copy of your birth certificate is also required.

After enrollment acceptance, you’ll need to submit a short writing sample and participate in phone interview with a member of our school staff, followed by a phone interview with one of our academic counselors. This will help us determine the best class schedule for you. To start the application process, click here.

Course Format

What kind of experience do your teachers have?
All our instructors are certified in Washington State, and have an average of three to five years of classroom experience. Many of our teachers also hold a master’s degree.

How are classes structured?
At the start of each class, you’ll receive:
  • Course Outline - A basic overview of your class projects and activities.
  • Class Compass - A list of assignments and due dates, so you can plan ahead.
  • Written Student Learning Plan (WSLP) - This state-required learning plan is developed by your instructor and personalized for you. Your WSLP details the class schedule, required materials, activities, learning goals, performance objectives, assessment strategy, academic intervention plan, and parent/guardian involvement.

All our elective classes feature a one-hour, live online session each week. Core classes meet twice a week. The rest of the time, you’ll work on assignments at your own pace. Of course, you’ll be required to turn in your assignments by their due dates. To help you stay on track, you’ll receive weekly online announcements and reminder emails from your instructor. Learn more about our programs here.

What kind of assignemnts can I expect?
Giant Campus of Washington uses a project-based learning model. This means you’ll do practice exercises, work on projects, and take quizzes to show your understanding of course concepts.

What if I miss a session?
You may ask your instructor for permission to make up the missed session by watching a recorded session.

Will I get to know other students in my class?
Yes, you’ll have the chance to interact with your classmates during class forums and by chatting online. We also have an extensive online campus, where you can connect to other students through virtual field trips, after-school clubs, and more. We’ll also provide opportunities for you to get together with other students in your area through study groups and meet-ups.

How do I contact my instructor if I have questions?
You’re welcome to email or call your instructor during his or her regular office hours.
